It is a common misconception that e-cigarettes are not as harmful as traditional cigarettes, with the youthful flavor offerings and loose regulations, the e-cigarettes trend is reaching younger patients.
We want to educate all of our patients to make good choices for gum, teeth, and oral tissue health. Don’t fall victim and think that an e-cigarette is a safe alternative to smoking or a sure-fire way to quit. According to the NC Dept of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) a single cartridge can contain enough puffs to equal up to a pack or more of cigarettes, so a smoker could be taking in much more nicotine than realized.
There is concern that e-cigarettes could quickly cause high levels of addiction among teens who are attracted to the appealing flavors.
The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has analyzed a small amount of e-cigarettes and cartridges and found some that contained known cancer-causing chemicals and others that contained chemicals that are toxic to humans.
Of course our choice for you is to never start or to quit smoking or using tobacco products; not only for your oral health, but for your overall health.
